An experiment still depends on the material used to begin it. I want to know where a source image came from and what conditions apply to its use. Changing its appearance does not automatically remove the need to consider permission.
For a public portfolio, my own images or clearly licensed material give the work a more dependable foundation. Keeping the source information with the project files makes later publication easier to review. That preparation is part of maintaining a useful experimental archive.
