A brief can contain many references while leaving the central problem unclear. I look for what the audience needs, what the deliverable must do and which constraints matter. A missing answer in one of those areas can affect every later decision.

Asking a focused question early can prevent a long discussion about unrelated preferences. The brief does not need to predict every detail. It needs to provide enough shared direction for the next stage of work to make sense.
