Choosing a palette is only part of building a usable colour system. Text, surfaces, emphasis and interaction need different kinds of contrast. I try to give each colour a purpose before spreading it across a design.

Testing a palette with actual content reveals where a bright accent helps and where it competes with reading. A colour chart is a useful reference, but the applications do the real work. The system needs to remain coherent when the content becomes longer or denser.
