The first screen does not need to explain an entire website. It needs to establish context and make the next useful action easy to find. I think about what a visitor should understand before asking them to scroll further.
A focused heading, a short introduction and a clear path into the work can do that job. Visual character still matters, but it should help orient the reader. I judge the opening by how well it begins the experience, not by how many elements it can contain.
