An external project link is most useful when it opens the work the visitor was just reading about. Sending someone to a general profile makes them search again. I prefer a direct route to the relevant presentation where one is available.
The label can explain that the destination contains a fuller case study or additional images. It should also make the external move clear. A good link extends the current story rather than interrupting it with another navigation task.
