A free portfolio script can include a visible credit to its creator. I prefer that relationship to be transparent and easy for the owner to understand. A hidden or compulsory link would undermine the trust the project is trying to build.
The documentation should distinguish the code licence from the rights attached to sample content and personal assets. A simple setting can control the footer credit. Attribution then becomes an open acknowledgement rather than an unexpected condition of using the product.
