Colour is an important part of recognition, but it should not carry the whole identity. Shape, typography and composition can provide continuity when colour is absent or changes across materials. I look at those relationships when assessing a system.

A monochrome test is a useful starting point. It makes the underlying form easier to evaluate and exposes weak distinctions. If the identity remains clear in that setting, colour can add character to an already coherent structure.
