A project filter is useful when its labels match the way a visitor thinks about the work. Internal discipline names can be precise for a designer and confusing for someone hiring one. I prefer labels that make the selection easy to predict.
The selected state and result count should also be clear. If a category has no results, the interface needs to explain what happened. The filter is a tool for exploring the portfolio, so it should reduce effort rather than introduce another vocabulary to learn.
