A README is often the first part of a project that another developer reads. It needs to explain what the project does, what it requires and how to get started. I treat that sequence as an introduction to the product.

Installation steps should describe a complete path rather than assume hidden knowledge. Examples, limitations and a simple project map can answer common questions. Clear documentation makes a small project easier to try and gives future changes a more reliable starting point.
